Jan 9th Greetings, This week in PAP ELAR students are learning about persuasive techniques. Monday they watched a movie trailer and analyzed a movie poster. Tuesday they will be introduced to ways advertisers entice a consumer into buying their product. Wednesday they will analyze commercials and identify the persuasive techniques. Thursday and Friday they will read persuasive articles. Just a reminder, students have their first WWW stem test next Wednesday. Along with reading 15 pages per night, students should be reviewing their stems. ________________________________________________________________________________ Greetings, There are only 9 more days of school until winter break and we have quite a lot to do before next Friday. Today I introduced the end of quarter writing project which is to write and perform a readers’ theatre. Students are going to write a script for either “The Raven”, “The Hitchhiker”, or “Tell Tale Heart”. Students will have class time to work on the assignment this week and next. Next Thursday and Friday they will perform. This is a summative. This Wednesday and Thursday students will take the QCA which is a skills-based test, covering topics we have worked with for the entire semester.Next Wednesday is our last WWW stem quiz on lists 1-10 for the semester. _________________________________________________________________________________ November 10th Greetings, This week we have been working on the writing process for our 2nd quarter writing assignment. We will be writing the final draft and hand it in tomorrow, Friday Nov 11th. Next week, our last week before Thanksgiving break we will be working on Grammar on Monday, reviewing stems on Tuesday, Wednesday is the stem test for lists 1-9. Thursday is our field trip to the high schools and Friday is the MISD read in day. There will also be a reading check next week. I have been reminding the students to record their reading in the reading logs and to remember to read 15 pages every day. Students needed to submit an electronic copy of all the written work on to TURNITIN.Com before they hand in their project. Monday we have Naviance training. This training is to see what possible career paths the students will go into in the future. Tuesday: Introduce stem list 8 Wednesday: Theme and reading of folk tales: “The Old Man and His Grandson” Thursday: Theme and reading of “The Wise Old Woman” and finding the universal theme in both folk stories. Friday: Finding Theme in other genres _________________________________________________________________________________ Oct 3,2016 Greetings, This week in Pre AP ELAR we are continuing our poetry unit by writing a blackout poem on Monday and TuesdayWednesday we will complete our final product of either the extended metaphor or black out poem for the QWA. This is a summative.Thursday and Friday is the Quarterly Cumulative Assessment (QCA), This is a summative. _________________________________________________________________________________ Sept 26, 2016 Greetings, This week in 8th grade PAP ELAR we will be working on poetry.Monday we began reading the poem “I Have a Rendezvous with Death” by Alan Seeger. In class, the students will use their poetry analysis notes to complete a TP-CASTT on the poem. The final draft will be completed by the end of class on Wednesday. This is a summative. Thursday and Friday we will begin the QWA, Quarterly Writing Assignment, this quarter's focus is on poetry and the students will begin writing two poems. There will also be a reading check later on this week.Be sure students are reading at least 15 pages per night. I will be handing out the 1st quarter independent reading project next week. This is a project they will have to do on one of the novels they read this quarter. __________________________________________________________________________________ Greetings, Sept 19,2016 This week we are learning poetry and creating poetry. Monday: C-notes on Elements of poetry where students will review and learn new terms and poetic devices. Tuesday: Read “Introduction to Poetry”, by Billy Collins Wednesday: Stem Test on lists 1-6. This is a summative. We have one summative test on stems each quarter. Thursday: Introduce “I Have a Rendezvous With Death”, by Alan Seager, create TP-CASTT Friday: Complete TP-CASTT __________________________________________________________________________________ Sept 12,2016 Greetings, This week progress reports will be available to view through HAC on Tuesday, so if you notice your student was not successful on either the Word within the Word quiz or “The Elevator” cold read assessment, have them come in for a retake to raise their grade. Monday and Tuesday this week we will be continuing our work on plot and conflict with our discussion of “The Elevator”, a story in our text book. Students will then be writing their own ending since the story stopped at the climax.Tuesday we will share our stories and our grammar focus will be appositives.Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we will read nonfiction articles and share our thoughts and ideas on the subject matter. A few reminders: Wednesday is our reading check. I will be checking to ensure students have been reading 15 pages a night for the last 7 days. Also, next Wednesday is our next WWW test, yes, this next one is a summative. We have one WWW test each quarter and this one will be on lists 1-6. Regards _________________________________________________________________________________ Sept 6,2016 Greetings, I hope everyone had an enjoyable Labor Day and ready to start the school/work week. This week in 8th PAP ELAR will be a busy one. Wednesday we will have our first reading check; students will need to have read at least 105 pages of their novel (that was 15 pages per day for the past 7 days). Also, we will have our first WWW quiz on lists 1-5. Remember you can find the lists on my website by hovering over the PAP button. Thursday and Friday we will be reading a short story from the textbook and reviewing plot and character traits for our first summative of the quarter. Also, if you have not signed up for Remind, please do so. There is an extra 10 points added to a formative if a parent signs up. The 10 points will be added to a grade this week. Lisa Noland _________________________________________________________________________________ Aug 29,2016 Greetings, We began this week in ELAR by going to the library and picking out a novel. Students will have time in class to read, I give about 10 minutes a day at least 3 times a week, but the majority of the reading should be done at home. This is their homework each night as well as studying stems. Students should be reading at least 15 pages a night. There will be a reading checks throughout the quarter,so students keep track of the pages they have read in their Reading Log. We will be setting up the Reading Logs tomorrow in class. Also, it is an expectation that when all work in class is completed, students will be reading in class. Here is what we will be doing in class for the remainder of the week: Tuesday: Setting up Reading Logs and Introducing Depth and Complexity (how to read and understand text) Wednesday: Identifying Depth and Complexity in non- Fiction scholastic magazine articles. Thursday: Reading and Identifying D & C in our own fiction novels to improve our depth of understanding and reading. Vocabulary review. Fri: Reading and Identifying D & C in our own fiction novels to improve our depth of understanding and reading. Vocabulary review. Throughout the week we will also be working on complex sentences for grammar. Reminders: First reading check and WWW Quiz lists 1-5 will be next Wednesday , Sept 7th. __________________________________________________________________________________ Aug 22,2016 Dear Parents, Well,we made it through the first day of school. Your student’s brain is overloaded with information from seven different teachers, so I thought I would write the more important things down for you. PreAP students will need to bring either a 3 or 5 subject spiral in by Wednesday since we will be taking notes that day. GT students need to have a 3 or 5 subject spiral as well as a ½ inch binder and 8 tabs for mock trial. They will need the binder and tabs by September 6th since we will start Mock trial that week. If they have them earlier they can bring them in. All Mock Trial binders will be stored in the classroom. During my talk today I have asked students to sign up for Remind as soon as possible since I like to send out texts to inform them of upcoming events. If parents sign up as well, I will add 10 points on a formative grade. You can sign up for Remind throught the link on my website. The code for PreAP is @nolandpap and the code for GT is @nolandgt.
